The Lottery Colour System

How a colour becomes a number — and what it honestly does and does not do.

A lottery ticket asks you to choose numbers. Most people find that hard, so they fall back on dates — which is why the numbers 1 to 31 are played far more often than the rest of the range, and why a winning line built from birthdays is more likely to be split between several winners. The colour system exists to make choosing easy without pushing everyone onto the same numbers.

How a colour becomes a number

Every lottery has a number range: Powerball's main pool runs 1–69, a 5/28 game runs 1–28. Lottery Colors divides that range into consecutive bands and gives each band a colour. Choosing a colour tells the generator which band to draw from; it then picks one number at random from inside that band.

For a five-number game across 1–28, the bands look like this:

  • red1–6
  • orange7–12
  • yellow13–18
  • green19–24
  • blue25–28

Pick red, red, green, blue, yellow and you get one number from 1–6, another from 1–6, one from 19–24, one from 25–28 and one from 13–18 — five numbers, all inside the range the game allows, with no duplicates.

Why the bands differ per game

The bands are derived from each game's own format, not applied as a fixed template. A game drawing 6 numbers from 1–49 needs wider bands than one drawing 5 from 1–28, and games with a separate bonus pool — Powerball's 1–26 red ball, EuroMillions' two Lucky Stars from 1–12 — get their own band set for that pool. The catalog stores the layout for all 859 lotteries, so the generator never produces a number the game would reject.

What this does not do

It does not improve your odds. A lottery draw has no memory and no preferences: the machine does not know which numbers were picked by colour, and every combination is equally likely on every draw. Nothing on this site predicts results, and any tool that claims to is wrong.

What colour picking genuinely changes is the distribution of your own choices. Because the bands cover the whole range evenly, colour-picked lines land outside the 1–31 cluster more often than hand-picked ones. That does not make a win more likely — it makes a win less likely to be shared.

Common questions

Can colors generate lottery numbers?
Yes — a colour is just a way of naming a range of numbers. Lottery Colors splits each game's number range into coloured bands, and picking a colour picks a random number from inside that band. The numbers that come out are ordinary random numbers; the colour only decides which part of the range they come from.
Does picking by colour improve my odds?
No. Every combination in a lottery draw has exactly the same probability, whether you chose it by colour, by birthday, by machine or at random. Colour selection changes how choosing feels, not what the draw does.
Why use colours instead of numbers?
Choosing six numbers from 1–49 is an abstract task most people resolve with birthdays, which clusters every player onto the same low numbers. Choosing five colours is a concrete one, and it spreads picks evenly across the whole range — so if a colour-picked line does win, it is less likely to be shared with other winners.
Are the bands the same for every lottery?
No. Each game has its own number range, so each game gets its own bands. A 5/28 game divides 1–28 into five bands of roughly six numbers; a 6/49 game divides 1–49 into bands of about eight. The generator reads the band layout from the catalog for the specific lottery you picked.
